Experience the Difference

In the right light

Kahanu Yoga & Meditation Spa has a dream to give you an experience that is different than anything you’ve experienced before. At first..it can seem a little…scattered. Have you been to a studio that offers the same class over and over with the same routines in the same order and with a lot of structure? If you have and you loved it, we might just throw you for a loop here.

At Kahanu, we’re offering complete creative freedom to our teachers…which translates into completely different experiences for YOU. Our intention is to create a community composed of very individual individuals! We’re not telling people how to teach their classes…we’re offering LOTS of different people the chance to teach in the style, manner, temperature level and experience level THEY want to teach in. Because we believe that happy teachers make PHENOMENAL teachers…and PHENOMENAL teachers make AMAZING classes…and AMAZING classes make for very, very HAPPY students!

We have a desire to embrace everyone here, no matter where you are on your journey. We’re all in different places, we all have different things going on in our lives, we all need a safe place to just BE. We want to offer that space. Everyone is welcome here.

When there is a teacher substitution, although you’ll still get the same class you signed up for and you’ll still get the same experience level and you’ll still get the same temperature you were expecting, you won’t get a copycat of the original teacher. We don’t ask our instructors to try to be someone else. We don’t ask them to fake it. We want YOU to get an authentic experience while you’re here and the only way to do that is to give our teachers the FREEDOM to be AUTHENTIC.

Yes, this means you could get some different answers to your questions or different feedback from one day to the next. But isn’t it that way with anything you’re taught? Take a history class. Take it twice. Take it once from a Democrat and once from a Republican. See if there’s a difference in the teaching. Take a religious class. Twice. Take it once from a Catholic priest and once from a Baptist preacher. Yup…you’re going to get a different teaching. Yoga is no different than any other teaching. There’s interpretation, there’s experience, there’s opinion and knowledge. All of those thing combined will give you a different class. Different answers. Different perspective. Different things to think about. A different way of looking at things. A better experience overall.

Remember: We teach what we want to learn. Imagine being taught that way…by a teacher who is also your student. By a teacher who is continually exploring and learning, adapting and changing, growing and experimenting. We have that here. In everyone. YOU are the student and YOU are the teacher. You are being led by someone with a gift…and that person is not closed to the gifts that YOU bring to the practice.

So stop on in sometime. Check out all of our amazing classes and teachers. You’ll find where you fit. You’ll find the ones that you have a connection with. You’ll find what you’re looking for.

Lesson of the Week – What are Bandhas?

This week’s lesson is a short, short introduction to bandhas.  As with all of these themes, there is so, so much more to know.  Please, explore and study on your own.  Read and practice further the lessons that intrigue you.  Spend your life studying and filling your mind with new information.  Sometimes all of this can be overwhelming…believe me…I know.  But from my personal experience, the more I study and the more I practice, the more often these concepts just sort of “wake up” inside of me.  That light comes on.  And my practice deepens…

Bandhas – Binding Locks

Bandhas are muscular locks created by contracting or squeezing certain muscles, holding them, then releasing them, thereby relaxing that area of the body.  Bandhas strengthen and balance the nervous system and subtle body and can be used for a variety of therapeutic effects. – From The Language of Yoga

jihva-bandha – tongue lock

mula-bandha – root lock

uddiyana-bandha – rising up lock

**Please note:  Bandhas should never be practiced while pregnant**

Understanding bandhas can really take your practice to the next level.  Ancient yogis would say that when you master the bandhas you master the practice.  The practice referred to is on the outside…on the mat…the physical practice BUT it also refers to the inside…your heart…your mental practice…your growth.  And…from a physical perspective, they can help you regulate your digestive system, your breath, your heart rate, your hormones, your metabolism and more.  They are not to be overlooked or taken lightly…

Practice with these.  Practice them alone…practice them during yoga.  Focus your mind on locking and releasing.  On moving your energy.  On relaxing your body.  Lock.  Hold.  Release.  And don’t forget to breathe…

Then watch where your practice goes…
