Experience the Difference

In the right light

Kahanu Yoga & Meditation Spa has a dream to give you an experience that is different than anything you’ve experienced before. At first..it can seem a little…scattered. Have you been to a studio that offers the same class over and over with the same routines in the same order and with a lot of structure? If you have and you loved it, we might just throw you for a loop here.

At Kahanu, we’re offering complete creative freedom to our teachers…which translates into completely different experiences for YOU. Our intention is to create a community composed of very individual individuals! We’re not telling people how to teach their classes…we’re offering LOTS of different people the chance to teach in the style, manner, temperature level and experience level THEY want to teach in. Because we believe that happy teachers make PHENOMENAL teachers…and PHENOMENAL teachers make AMAZING classes…and AMAZING classes make for very, very HAPPY students!

We have a desire to embrace everyone here, no matter where you are on your journey. We’re all in different places, we all have different things going on in our lives, we all need a safe place to just BE. We want to offer that space. Everyone is welcome here.

When there is a teacher substitution, although you’ll still get the same class you signed up for and you’ll still get the same experience level and you’ll still get the same temperature you were expecting, you won’t get a copycat of the original teacher. We don’t ask our instructors to try to be someone else. We don’t ask them to fake it. We want YOU to get an authentic experience while you’re here and the only way to do that is to give our teachers the FREEDOM to be AUTHENTIC.

Yes, this means you could get some different answers to your questions or different feedback from one day to the next. But isn’t it that way with anything you’re taught? Take a history class. Take it twice. Take it once from a Democrat and once from a Republican. See if there’s a difference in the teaching. Take a religious class. Twice. Take it once from a Catholic priest and once from a Baptist preacher. Yup…you’re going to get a different teaching. Yoga is no different than any other teaching. There’s interpretation, there’s experience, there’s opinion and knowledge. All of those thing combined will give you a different class. Different answers. Different perspective. Different things to think about. A different way of looking at things. A better experience overall.

Remember: We teach what we want to learn. Imagine being taught that way…by a teacher who is also your student. By a teacher who is continually exploring and learning, adapting and changing, growing and experimenting. We have that here. In everyone. YOU are the student and YOU are the teacher. You are being led by someone with a gift…and that person is not closed to the gifts that YOU bring to the practice.

So stop on in sometime. Check out all of our amazing classes and teachers. You’ll find where you fit. You’ll find the ones that you have a connection with. You’ll find what you’re looking for.

LOVE Yourself…REALLY Love Yourself!! It’s time!

Image

I haven’t been inspired to write lately…or read…or teach…or much of anything.  So I took a little break and did a lot of internal reflection.  I discovered that I actually WANTED to do these things…but I wasn’t inspired to.

When I would try to think of what to write, I came up blank.

When I would try to think of what to teach (or even who to teach it to).  I came up blank.

When I would tell myself to read something positive or inspiring, I couldn’t focus on it.

But I WANTED to.

So today I began a new day with a new outlook.  I set a plan.  I began a cleanse.  I set my alarm and woke up early like I used to when I had a day job to go to.  I reflected.  I practiced some very gentle restorative yoga.  I told my (yes…out loud while looking in the mirror) that I love myself.

Which also got me thinking.

Do I really?  I tell myself that I love myself but do I really mean it?

If I think about others that I love and how I treat them…is that the same way I treat myself?

The things I say to myself (in my own head and with my body language and with the look on my face when I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror)…are those the same things I would say to someone I love?

Oh my goodness no!

The way I think about myself.  Is that the way I think about the people I love?

NO!

What about the way I nourish my body?  The amount of alcohol I drink or the amount of water I take in or the kinds of food I nourish myself with…are those the same recommendations I would give to someone I love?  What about the amount of sleep, the amount of stress I let in, the level of anxiety I keep or the degree and type of exercise I get?  No.  The list goes on and on and on.  There are so, so many ways that I SHOW myself a lack of love that I would never show to someone I really love.

So…today is a new day.  Today started early and it was met with a routine that I shall continue.  My morning included oil pulling (if you’re not familiar, check it out), hot water with lemon (completely skipped the coffee), a new cleanse (a healthy one), fresh juice from my juicer, yoga, meditation, healthy breakfast and snack, lots of water and….

what followed was an inspiration to write this post.  A smile that I forgot could exist for no apparent reason.  A fun text conversation with my love.  An inspiring and positive call from a friend.

Again…we’re talking about a list that goes on and on and on.

And I just started today.

I’m feeling very blessed and I don’t think it happened by accident.  I firmly believe that blessing abound when we love ourselves.  When we REALLY love ourselves.  I believe we manifest the most amazing things when we take time to care for ourselves, pray, allow God to talk to us and when we notice and hear the sounds of the world.

Right now, I hear my dog lightly snoring, I hear children at the nearby grade school playing at recess.  I hear Zen meditation music from Pandora.  I hear birds (I don’t know if they’re outside or also on Pandora but it doesn’t matter…).

I hear love.  I feel love.  I feel energy (and by the way, for the first time in a very, very long time I also skipped the coffee this morning…Oh…wait…I said that already.  But it’s a BIG deal for me!!).  I feel a sense of direction…of purpose.  And I feel inspired.

My wish for you today is that you feel some of this or more of it.  And let me know if it makes you smile.  I know today…it makes me smile.

And tomorrow will be more of the same.

Because it’s time to not just tell myself I love myself but to actually TREAT myself as I love myself.

Everyone Is On His or Her Own Journey

Image

It can be so easy to judge others.  It is so easy to project our own reality into the lives of others….especially when it comes to those who think, look, speak or feel differently than we do.

Today, realize and respect the fact that we are all on our own journey and that we are all in different places on that journey.

Whether you are at work, in school, taking a yoga class or simply walking down the street, notice how often you look at someone else and judge them for being different than you.  Notice how easily you project your stereotypes on them based on your own experiences in life…based on what you’ve learned…based on what others have told you.  Notice how quickly you decide who they are, who they are not and who they ought to be.

Then stop.  Stop and realize that you know nothing of their reality.  Realize you know nothing of what they’ve been through, what they’re going through or what they’ve survived.  Realize that you only know one thing:  You know that this is a fellow human being with thoughts and feelings and loves and losses…just like you.

Take a step back and notice how we are all connected…how we all breathe the same air and walk the same paths.  Soak in that feeling of being human and sharing this planet with so many other living creatures that you know nothing about.

Now…turn your focus inward.  Notice your own breath.  Notice your own heart.  Feel it open to love and kindness and compassion.  Feel yourself connect with the world around you.  Feel the smile of a child you’ve never met…the tender touch of an elderly man or woman with years of wisdom shining in their eyes…the silent tears of someone in need…the bubbling laughter of a joyous moment…the gentle hug of a loved one.

Look inside yourself.  Notice how you judge.  Not just others…notice how you judge yourself.

Now…turn your focus outward once again.  Notice the breath of others.  Notice their hearts.  Feel them open to love and kindness and compassion.  Feel the world around you connected to YOU.  See your childlike smile…your wisdom…your tears…your laughter…your hug.

We are all connected.  We are all one.  We are all humans who share this planet.  There is no need to judge.  We are all on a journey…and we are all in different places on that journey.  Let love and understanding guide you today and always…
